Daiichi Sankyo, in cooperation with the international NGO Save the Children, launched a project to improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health services to protect maternal and child health in the mountainous area of northern Vietnam where many ethnic minorities live.

In Yên Bái province of Vietnam where many ethnic minorities live, there is a high rate of child marriages in which girls under the age of eighteen marry, as well as numerous issues concerning sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), which are women’s basic rights. Such issues include non-consensual sex, unexpected pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and the high risk of sexually transmitted diseases.
The Vietnamese government has made great efforts to improve the situation regarding adolescents’ SRHR and has encouraged people to be equipped with sexual and reproductive knowledge and skills, but in this mountainous region where many ethnic minorities live, further interventions have become pressing needs.
Given this background, this project aims to prevent child marriage, early childbearing, and childbirth, and to protect maternal and child health by preparing child-friendly visual aids and training guidelines and conducting activities that strengthen education on ASRH* care, as well as activities to support the provision and management of hygiene products that support ASRH care services, thereby improving the quality of and the access to sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents (ages 15 to 19).

Through the activities of this project, we will contribute to the achievement of Goal 3 “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” and Goal 5 “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
