According to “The Course of Population Aging” released by Taiwan’s National Development Council, Taiwan became an aging society in 1993, an aged society in 2018, and by 2025 is expected to transform into a super-aged society in which more than 20% of its population is considered to be “elderly.”

The Director of the Keelung City Government’s Social Affairs Department,
Wu Ting-fend, received supplies from Daiichi Sankyo on behalf of the City
Government and disadvantaged elderly people.

Some research reports also point out that Taiwan has over 400,000 elderly living alone with one quarter of them being economically disadvantaged with middle or low income. In addition, marginalized elderly people who are disqualified from receiving government resources also slowly lose dependence. These difficulties may be compounded by disability, physical accident, or sudden economic hardship, leading some to feel forgotten by society.

Over the last few years, Daiichi Sankyo in Taiwan has redoubled its focus in facilitating the improved physical and mental health of elderly people as one way to fulfill our corporate social responsibilities.

This year, working towards the objective of taking care of middle and low-income elderly who live alone, we cooperated with the Keelung City Government’s Department of Social Affairs and the Kaohsiung City Government’s Social Affairs Bureau to provide resources to the elderly population.

Daiichi Sankyo employees visited elderly people living alone in Keelung City.

Led by enthusiastic social workers and volunteers from all parts of the company, our staff had the opportunity to care for elderly people while providing resources to community members in need. As a result, this one-and-half month interactive activity successfully delivered warm greetings to 300 elderly people.

Caring for elderly people in Taiwanese society through this activity helps make our work more meaningful and gives elderly people living alone an opportunity to talk about their daily lives

Through these conversations, we reported they could feel their joy, pleasure, melancholy, sentimentality, sense of inferiority, or even loneliness. This activity also opened the door to a world we do not always see and showed them the lifestyle and story of each elderly person behind each door.

Reflecting on this activity, Sheron Lin, the President of Daiichi Sankyo Taiwan Ltd. remarked that Daiichi Sankyo hopes to put Goal 3 of United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched in 2015 (“Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”) into practice.

Over the last few years, Daiichi Sankyo in Taiwan has redoubled its focus in facilitating the improved physical and mental health of elderly people as one way to fulfill our corporate social responsibilities.

Furthermore, Ms. Lin believes that, although Taiwanese society will face great challenges through the aging issue, the efforts of Daiichi Sankyo’s employees will set a good example for others and encourage more people to give back to society.
